How to break the ice without falling through and getting frozen.

I don't know about anyone else but when it comes to talking to people, the hardest thing always seems to be, How do I start this conversation? This is true in face-to-face encounters and triple true for online interactions with people where your only clue is their profiles. A "Hello" or "What's up" will normally never be answered but if it does get answered it will be a short sentence with little clues how to proceed. Me personally I like asking either "How are you doing today?" or a witty (to me at least) comment about their profile and a follow up question. This unfortunately rarely if ever works for me, I have asked several people why my "icebreakers" don't work and they tell me that it comes across as ingenuine and I am only asking to ask instead of actually caring about the answer. I have to admit that I am stumped on how to alter my icebreaker without seeming to intrusive but still show that I am genuinely interesting in them.
What icebreakers have you used or had used on you and which ones worked best? Do you have a preference on how someone should approach you that you wish everyone knew? Feel free to leave a comment and let others know what you think.

I am relatively new to this site so I may seem a little shy. The truth is I am not, I am just waiting to see if I really like this site before I become a gold member so If you message or flirt with me I am sorry for the delay before I activate the membership to answer. I look forward to making alot of new friends (and maybe more  ) so keep the flirts and messages coming in and hold nothing back so I will have plenty to do when I get my gold on.
