Great post today KZ with some awesome pics too. When I was growing up I didn't have much but I am living the dream now. Saving and good planning is what it took. got the mortgage paid off before I retired and then downsized and reinvested that money into something that could make money. For me all is good now. I never want to live in at that level again. hugssssss V Become a blog watcher sweet_vm

I myself have lived with less, made it work, and happy at that. I try to live modestly now having gone through that. "Your idea of a romantic evening involves a candlelight spaghetti dinner with canned Ragu sauce, Velveeta, and a fresh bottle of Wild Irish Rose." a few years back I let a guy cook me dinner and it was along those lines. I just smile and thank him and move on to the bedroom for fun.... Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. --Benjamin Franklin

PD's behind in her responses...lol. I know you've been raising Pidge on your own. I also know you don't forget where you've been. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

When I prepare taxes for someone on social security, I have a hard time not being pissed off. Someone over 65 living on $12000.00 a year, especially women. Just ridiculous to think survival is possible. If there is any kind of medical issue, most likely medications will wipe out the monthly food budget. I have been poor. It costs a lot of money to be poor. You pay to cash your pay check. You pay to get money orders, you pay late fees, you pay higher interest. You pay more medical. The list goes on and on. I could so soapbox this issue! Thank you for sharing. I read the transcript from NPR. No easy fix but we have to start somewhere. I try to educate my younger tax clients about savings and preparing for tomorrow.

You get it- "It costs a lot of money to be poor." Many hospitals have had a habit of charging more for care of patients who have no insurance. It's an accounting write-off gimmick, but the very people who are living on the edge are buried with even more debt. It's predatory, and wrong. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

It's nice to have a sense of humor about it (and you guys may be poor but I think you live better than this...)

Growing up I never realized I was poor. The only thing that kept a roof over our heads and food on the table was a widow's pension from Social Security and the Veterans Administration. As an adult I believed we were well off, but it was just an illusion, because I had so much more than living on assistance provided. I once lost a job and health insurance and realized just how vulnerable we are. My husband found a job that included health insurance and moved several states away. It took him only two weeks to locate a job with benefits allowing him to give two weeks notice before leaving a very good job working for a friend. It was the highest income he'd ever had, but there was no health insurance and we could not buy it at any price. I remained in my job for another 9 months until the position was terminated. I also tried to sell our house but was unsuccessful, probably because the houses on either side had gone into foreclosure. We rented the house for two years, but there was so much damage it cost $17,000 to repair it in order to sell it for far less than it was worth. In the transition, we went from having a paid off home to one with a $50,000 mortgage. We've now paid off this mortgage with a portion of a small inheritance.
