Icebreaker When we took our break today at the land bridge in Al Sabo Preserve, there was a pair of mallards swimming in the marsh pond west of the bridge. They had got separated by the ice, which isn’t very thick yet, and channels are still running through it in lots of places. The male had entered a channel taking him south, and she was stuck in a bay a few feet from the main channel. I watched, figuring she’d retreat and swim around the bend to join her mate, but instead she crawled up on the thin ice shelf, and immediately broke through. Again I wondered why she didn’t just swim around, but she knew what she was doing. She continued climbing up onto the ice and breaking through it in the direction she wanted to go. She never got more than a couple of steps on the shelf until it would break, and she’d repeat. Finally she had a clear channel broken from her bay to the main channel. I can’t remember ever seeing a duck icebreaker before. The Russians may have a lot more icebreakers in the arctic than we do, but we got ducks! The sun on the ice was real pretty. It hasn't been at all cool here. Unless it plunges for a long spell there won't be any ice for the ice fishermen. We had bare ground in late December last year, but we also had cold. Come January it started to snow, so there's still hope for this winter still. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

It was pretty cool. I've noticed that a lot of times when people don't know what an animal is doing, they think the animal is dumb. That bird had a plan and stuck to it. Gracie gets her long leash tangled in the brush sometimes. I tell her "Go back the way you went in"...and she does. Retraces her steps and comes out untangled. Not so dumb! The other day a guy and his kid lost a walkie talkie in the meadow grass. I asked him to let her smell the other one. She sniffed it, and I told her go find it. She walked about twenty feet and stood on top of it. It COULD have been a fluke...but I'm giving her credit for it. We play a "hide the tennis ball" game and she finds it every time. That's right. When ducks do it it's often a gang r**e. Ferrets don't gang up on a female, but they're damned rough about it. There aren't gonna be any flowers and a movie, or a candlelit dinner. But it works the other way sometimes too. Lot's of female birds mate with every male they can, while the male is minding the nest. And when there's no bull around, cows will hump hell out of each other. So- it isn't so different from us after all, is it?  Become a member now and get a free tote bag.
