I DON’T DO HALLOWEEN
I DON’T DO HALLOWEEN I don’t celebrate Halloween, but I don’t mind half-nakedly ravaging a pumpkin at this time of year! When I was a , the main event to mark at this time of year was Bonfire Night, also called Guy Fawkes Night, on the 5th of November. There were always lots of parties with a bonfire burning and lots of fireworks going off. I was always a sucker for sparklers! On top of the bonfire, an effigy of Guy Fawkes would be placed and everyone would watch it burn. Guy Fawkes was part of a Catholic plot to burn down the British Parliament in 1605 in order to kill the Protestant King James I and to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The Gunpowder Plot failed and Guy Fawkes was executed. Since then, the 5th of November has always been celebrated in Britain, though in recent years the celebration is called Bonfire Night rather than Guy Fawkes Night in order not to give offence to Catholics. However, the popularity of Bonfire Night has waned and instead Halloween has taken over as the dominant celebration at this time of year. There’s far more money to be made selling Halloween paraphernalia than fireworks! Do you celebrate Halloween? If so, how do you celebrate Halloween? Another reason I don’t celebrate Halloween is that I live in a block of apartments so no come round for trick-or-treat. Also, for some inexplicable reason, I don’t get invited to Halloween parties! But to those who do mark the 31st of October, I wish you all a Happy Halloween! Inside is a story of an Englishman who had sex with a pumpkin! |

Two years ago, Ralph Bishop was caught by the police with his trousers down trying to have sex with a large pumpkin in a field in the English county of Suffolk. A court fined him £100 for ravishing a pumpkin and ordered him to pay the farmer £10 as compensation. The farmer, who grew potatoes as well as pumpkins, was called Maurice Piper. I think the local newspaper, the Suffolk Gazette, may have reported a spoof story. Maris Piper is a variety of potato!

The price of fireworks seems to have dampened the spirit of bonfire night. I have celebrated Halloween by dressing up but not for the last couple of years.

I've celebrated Halloween for most of my life. Happily, I was a child before treats needed to be x-rayed and candy inspected for other dangers. I've been to adult Halloween parties and children's Halloween parties. My carved pumpkins were always a big hit with the neighborhood kids. When I moved from my house to an apartment, I willingly retired from Halloween celebrating, passed along all my decorations to the next generation and hung up my pumpkin carving tools ... forever! Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

Years ago, people had costume parties at their home, with plenty of food and drinks, that was the good old days!

These days I usually don’t want the leftover treats in the house - so on Halloween night I try to be somewhere other than home. Or I turn off as many lights as possible and hide in the dark.

I don't get invited to parties cause I do not drink much any more and they all don't want a recovering drug addicte around. I do not dress up any more. Where I live in the apartment complex no kids so I just stay home .

Ah, the good ole days! Loved it when I was kid. Had to inspect all candy for danger before devouring. I loved taking my littles truck or treating. Sometimes there would be a group of us parents and all the wee ones strolling through town. Small town, pop 2000. Everyone knows everyone. They outgrew it. The youngest likes to decorate. Pain in the ass, but I did it with joy. We always had the best house. This year, youngest is away at school. I didn’t have it in me to go it alone. Didn’t seem right. No ones dressing up here. Maybe next year? We have had 20+ years of fun and parties. So, this isn’t the end. Just taking a year off I think. Interesting that lots of candy came out in the UK that became Halloween favs for the US. Pop rocks & starburst are a few. Have a great day! 💋 Staci

Halloween... that's where you buy a bunch of candy to give out but then you eat it all so you have to keep your porch light dark that evening right?

I love Halloween but I don't celebrate it like I use to, like you we live in Apartments and with Covid a lot of kids don't trick or treat really much anymore. But I am going to go and buy a couple of bags of candy just in case later today.. Do you celebrate Halloween? I used to but not so much any more. If so, how do you celebrate Halloween? We used to dress up for my work when I was a bartender, it was a really fun night in which I really looked forward to as I love this time of year. Now we just sit home and pass out candy if we get any trick or treaters. I hope you enjoy a Thrilling Thursday..
