Desert Gremlins continue their play

The Gremlims continue to play with us.

We just got our landline back on after it was dead for three days. Since we're on molasses slow dial-up, that meant we also had no Internet service.

We also lost another car out of service. The starter on my old Colt went out.

I was JUST able to get the broken starter off the Colt using about every tool I had, and shrinking my large hands down as small as possible to get in the the tiny space provided in that particular compact car where the broken starter is seated.

The Internet is invaluable to us in this remote location for finding parts for cars, and buying items.

We're lucky we DO have Fed Ex service here. It's also lucky that I'm mechanically adept. It's not possible for anyone to live in areas like this one, without being a sort of jack of all trades.

When the Internet came back on, we were able to locate the proper starter to fit the small old car, and order it by Fed Ex. The new starter should arrive in a couple of days. Putting the new starter back on the Colt will be difficult, but since I struggled with taking the old starter off, I now know exactly what wrenches to use, and where my hands can squeeze through a space just large enough to be able to tighten the bolts.

As perverse as it sounds to many of you who hire out all your work on cars and your homes, I actually enjoy doing this type of work. If we lived in a city, or close to anywhere there was a proper vehicle repair shop, I'd probably have the shop do the work, but I don't begrudge the effort in doing it myself. If gives me more respect for mechanics and the hard work they do, and justifies the money these repair shops now charge for even the most simple repair work.

I have no real idea what the charge would be on replacing the starter on my old Colt. The price that I paid for the new starter Fed Ex is delivering was about $120.00, so I suppose the cost of having the work done in a garage--if any garage was even available--would be probably close to $400.00.

Meanwhile, Marisol is plugging away on sorting out the wiriing on our old water truck. She reminded me to mention that one of the MAIN reasons why we're determined to keep using that old truck is that we don't have to have it SMOGGED every two years. Vehicles older that 1972, don't need the smog inspection here.

California has become a state that is messing so badly with its laws, that EVERYTHING one does here anymore needs a certificate, or a permit, or a license. Not only are these permits expensive, but in the case of Marisol and me, making an appointment to have our vehicles inspected, and then traveling miles at a certain time to get to the shop is beyond enduring!

I'm sorry I haven't had the time or energy --nor even the Internet service--available to visit all your blogs, M. and I will eventually catch up on all this extra work.

The Gremlins who have been pestering us will finally give up and go elsewhere, and we'll be back to our peacefull desert living, and I can get back to writing some more filthy adventures of my early life....I hope you dear readers who follow my hills and valleys in this life and on these posts, will stay me until then, and not give up on this blog.

    Hello my friend.

i know what you mean about time. I have plenty of internet...it's the time I sorely miss.

And to be honest, the muse isn't very amusing to me right now. Perhaps she'll return, bat her eyes, and I'll jump back in. But for now, I drop in, read snippets about my friends lives (yours at the top of the list) and move on.

Hope all is well with you and M.

We just went through another day of no telephone (landline) service. I think Verizon is finally trying to replace and repair this ancient system of underground string connected to cereal boxes. LOL.

I always look forward to your posts, Bob. I've decided to relax into our current situation here. Today I replaced the starter on our old Colt, and it's back on the dirt trails once more, and now that we're using our old outhouse again, we have enough stored fresh water to get through this hot, hot, hot summer.

I've also made arrangements to buy 500 gallons of water from an old ex-marine who lives a couple of miles away, and Marisol is rather enjoying working wire by wire on our old truck.... as always, thanks for your warm comments.. xxxxdavid

Your ability to fly through the web is an asset that's worth a lot of attention from the places you apply for a good job--and I hope you find a place that appreciates all your abilities, D..... Even though we only have dial-up here, the Internet is still invaluable to us.

All of the young military living here use it to its max. , but there are still many of our older friends who just can't seem to grasp computers or any of the new electronics and are still living by snail mail.

I'm really interested in your new adventure, and was with you on your rainy drive to Mobile with the huge U-Haul! xxxxdavid

Marisol has surprised me in accepting all our Gremlins with better humor than I have. I'm still very angry at those rats on the Water Board who gave us no warning before cutting off our water supply.

Thank you for reading my recent very self-serving and crying over spilled mild posts.. love, David..
